The Lungau

The Lungau is a 'Region' of Salzburg province.  It lies just over the main alpine ridge south of Salzburg and is approached either by the old road passing over Obertauern, or by following the A10 motorway and travelling through the Tauern tunnel towards Italy.
The skiing in this region is mostly unknown to many visitors but it is very extensive and has the benefit of being only 15 minutes from Obertauern with its ski season running into May. The provincial town of Tamsweg is quite medieval as are several other small towns in the area. Walking, cycling and mountainbiking are all possible in summer.  A truly wonderful area with excellent skiing in St Michael im Lungau, St Margarethen, Fanningberg, Mauterndorf and Katschberg.
